Retro Child Support

In my divorce decree, it states that no residential parent shall be named for three years. After three years, we can go back to court to have one named and then child support shall be determined. However, my ex (who had the kids during the week during the school year and two weeks on, two weeks off during the summer) had filed for child support in 2005 (two years earlier than what the decree says he could). It has been postponed until tomorrow when the judge will hear his petition and says I could pay child support back that far. My ex has been named residential parent in November of 2006, and I have been paying child support since May of this year. I understand I may have to pay retro child support to November, when the residential parent was named, but to 2005? I am wondering how that is, when both of us signed the decree stating we won't pay child support until a residential parent is named.

Any suggestions, past court cases that I can refer to? It would be quite a bit of money if I have to pay this.
