Reasonable Legal Fees?

I am in San Francisco and am in the process of being evicted for failure to pay one month's rent. My two roommates and I have been reasonable tenants, just falling on a string of bad luck. The lawyer for our apartment complex says that if we pay everything that we owe to the apartment complex (about $4,000), they will make the whole thing go away. This was given to us without an attorney present and without anything in writing.

However, we talked to a group of eviction specialists and they told us that although it is legal for the apartment to charge us for their legal fees, it comes down to how much would be considered "reasonable." How can we make it so that we can bring the value ($1900) down to something more affordable to a couple of college students with part time jobs?
