Hello all! I am looking to see if public high schools in California are legally allowed to hire students that are attending said school. The working age here (California) is 16, so anyone at or above that age can work. If we can work at say, McDonald's, or a pop and mom store, why wouldn't they be able to work at a school.

I'm aware that students would be in school during school hours, going to classes, I am noting for after school hours, for example for sports.

Please let me know. Thanks.

I can't imagine that there would be any law against schools hiring students for part time jobs.

It would just be at the discretion of the school, the district or the state superintendent of education.

Try addressing your question to the CA Dept of Education:

California Department of Education

Or read the CA Education Code:

CALIFORNIA EDUCATION CODE

Just understand that if it's not specifically addressed it still might be policy not to hire students.
