My boyfriend of 6 years gave me a used car for my birthday (financed in his name, worth $10,000). We recently broke up and he is now threatening to come and take the car. I'm in the process of changing jobs, so I can't finance one myself and won't be able to get to my new job. I assume that since the car is in his name it's his property, but do I have any rights to the car since it was a gift? We live in Michigan.

If it was truly a gift to you, it would be in your name don'tcha think?

Since the car is in his name you have no rights to it so he can claim the car anytime.

You would have to prove that the car was yours. If it is in his name only, he has the leverage.

Time to consider alternatives to using that car.

There's a written, official document that says it's his.

What do you have?

Thanks everyone. In retrospect, the fact he left his name on the title instead of putting mine on it, is just another sign I failed to notice!
