Price of Forever stamps going up!

UPS is struggling to manage it's financial situation.

The last time I sent a priority mail envelop from Long Island to Albany NY it had a layover in Dallas TX.

I think that illustrates part of its problem.

Bear in mind that rates for competitive services, like priority mail, are not subject to rate limits set by the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC). The USPS merely needs to advise the PRC and the public prior to the rate change.

The services that the USPS must get approval from the PRC are those in which the USPS has a monopoly or heavy market power. First class mail is the best example because by federal law only the USPS may provide that particular service. The problem for the USPS is that a lot of these products are money losers. It runs counter to the notion that a monopoly tends to make more money than a company would make on the same product in a competitive market place. That's the effect of regulation. Unfortunately, the requirement that Congress has set for the USPS to operate without funding from Congress can't be met when it is required to provide a service like first class mail but can't charge at least the cost of the service.
