I am going to remarry in a couple of months and am thinking about getting a "prenup" to protect myself from financial disaster in the event of divorce. I am skeptical. I want to protect my retirement accounts and real estate. Do premarital agreements really protect assets, or can the family law master overrule this contract?

Check your state laws on pre-nups. You should be able to protect premarital assets but with that said sometimes if you are married for a certain amount time wife is entitled to percentage of retirement and other benefits regardless of pre-nup. Document all premartial assets with video/pictures and line item list. Make a copy, seal it in an envelope and mail to yourself and do not open. Hopefully you have receipts for those items that ar costly, that show dates purchased; make a copy and add to envelope and keep receipts in lock box/safe.
