I need to know what steps I need to take to get a paternity test. My 17 year old son's ex girlfriend just delivered a beautiful little boy and is saying that my son is the father. The possibility is definitely there however there is another guy in the picture that could also be the father. I also want to find out how I go about finding out if she put my son's name on the birth certificate. I know that she said she was going to give the baby her last name. Can she put him on the birth certificate without his permission? We are all not really on speaking terms and my son vehemently denies the baby is his. I just feel like we need to know one way or the other. I don't want 10 years to go by and then find out the baby was his.

In most states he has to sign the acknowledgement of paternity for it to be legal. You need to google your states guidelines for establishing paternity but your son needs to go to court and look into getting a DNA test. Your son has to act though. If this girl goes on any form of government assistance the state will force her to identify the father and file a child support order. Mom can file for child support at any time so your son might as well find out if he is the dad or not.
