I was served a summons for a medical bill that was about $250. The total in the complaint was over $500.00 including atty. fees. I figured if I went to the original creditor and payed the amount due, I could avoid paying the 250.00 atty. fees. So I was able to pay the debt online and then filed a answer at the court saying the debt had been payed. Now the lawyers have a court date set to get me to pay the atty. fees. What are my defenses, if any?

You really don't have a defense.

The creditor incurred attorney fees because you didn't pay the bill and they were forced to sue you. They're stuck with the attorney fees - it's really only fair that you pay them.

(Because if you had paid the bill originally, the fees wouldn't have become necessary).

Sorry, OP.
