OK to Work?

My ex-wife has been having my 11 year old daughter work at the business that she owns. My daugther is working during her holiday break. Is it legal to have an 11 year work at a family owned business?

What is the nature of the business, what state is this, and what kind of jobs is the child doing?

My daughter is working at a dog day care for her mother. This is in California. She does jobs such as cleaning cages, feeding dogs, sometimes she answers the phone for customer calls, and clean up after the dogs outside. She is doing the same tasks as some of the other employees. She is not on payroll, so she is working for free.

In many states, a child working for their parent(s) is exempt from child labor laws. I do not know off hand if CA is one of those states; however, the DLSE would be able to tell you.
