My question is:

Can I get fired for "off the clock" conduct?

Im sure the answer depends on the situation. But what laws or cases can i review to help build a case as to why someone can or cant be fired for what they do after work?

should it be in a company contract? or is it a law?

employment agreement

most positions require you to sign an employement agreement/contract. it really depends on your field.
if you work at a bank, for example, it may sign something that states that an arrest or conviction of theft may void your employement.

or a cop could be fired for taking controlled substances over the weekend.

what's your field/job? Please explain your situation.

Wal-mart has a "conflict of interest" contract you have to sign. If there is something you enjoy more than working at wal mart and they find out about it, it can be basis for termination.
