Consumer Law, Warranties no contract but with official receipt

hello. we don't have a written contract with our caterer for the wedding. but he used the official receipt of his brother (the gown maker) when we payed him 50% which is $1000, and he signed his name on it. in short, he never showed his face again and did not deliver any kind of service. if we go to court, will the official receipt and a verbal contract hold? can we get the money back? thanks.
