My son petitioned for joint custody of his daughter last year. His ex-girlfriend and him were awarded joint custody. They share rotating days off since they both work the midnight. We (the grandparents) keep his daughter and her son on the days and nights they have to work. My son's ex have just filed for modification of custody and now wants primary custody and child support for their daughter. Is this possible since they both still work midnight shift and we have provided childcare for both children.

Yes, it's entirely possible.

However, Mom will usually need a change in circumstance to modify the current arrangement.

I agree Dad needs to fight it and remind Mom they have 50/50 custody and that you babysit the kids. If she wants child support then Dad should tell mom he will ask for mom to pay 50% of child care costs then. Unless mom has a change in circumstance she just cannot ask for sole and child support. Maybe she thinks sole custody automatically gets her child support?
