I need some general advice on filing a defamation charge. I work in public safety. I am a female who directly supervises several males. My part time job is in a hospital. Recently one of my supervisors told me that he was approached by a person that I work with at that hospital and was told that I was having a sexual affair with one of my subordinates. The information she gave him is not true in any way. Do I have grounds to file a criminal defamation claim?

No. Have you been damaged in anyway? No. Perhaps hurt feeling, but that doesn't count.

If you lose your job, then sure, you would have something to go on.

I feel my reputation has been damaged to some degree. I am the only female with male subordinates in a dept of over 300 people. My superiors need to know they can trust me. Is there any legal action that can be taken against people who tells lies about another person? I am not seeking monetary gain and this is not about my "feelings." It's the principle of the thing, and to hopefully keep the same sort of thing from happening to others.

I understand, but you still have to show damages. People have a right to voice their opinion, even if it's wrong.

Without damages, you have nothing to put into a complaint to have relief granted.

Again, I do understand, and I'm not saying you are wrong. That's just how law works.

Well that just sux. Meanwhile this little witch can run around spreading lies and gossip about anyone she dislikes. Guess it's time to handle this the old fashioned way..... Thanks for the advice.

I will explore that avenue. I think the hold fashioned way would end with me needing a lawyer. Very tempting and would most likely be worth it. But I'm not sure she would learn her lesson that way
