Legal Guardian of a niece.

Hello,

My sister's 14 year old daughter is coming from Russia this summer to live with us. She is a US citizen. She will finish school and go to college here in the States. I will have to add her to my Medical Insurance too. My understanding, I have to become her Legal Guardian. Probably my wife too, since I am out of town a lot.
Where do I start? What exact papers do I need to gather and fill out? Do I need an Attorney for that or I can file all papers myself. I called the Court but they did not give me a strait answer.

Before you agree to anything, I suggest you consult an attorney. You could be putting yourself and your family in jeopardy. Speak with an attorney, as you will need legal guardianship. Does the child come from a two parent or a single parent home? These are questions an attorney will need to know. Whatever you do, don't allow that14 year old to arrive unaccompanied and before you have consulted an attorney.
