Ahh, yes, the old MD "rental vehicle protection law".
Excerpted portions of the law reads:
§ 18-106. Unauthorized use of rented motor vehicle.
(a) Lessees permitting other persons to drive rented motor vehicles.- If a person rents a motor vehicle under an agreement not to permit another person to drive the vehicle the person may not permit any other person to drive the rented motor vehicle.
(b) Rental agreements prohibiting other persons from driving vehicles.- If a person rents a motor vehicle under an agreement not to permit another person to drive the vehicle no other person may drive the rented motor vehicle without the consent of the lessor or his agent.

Your best bet is to appear as instructed, plead not guilty, and discuss this with a few traffic law or defense attorneys in your county, after you've made your initial appearance.

§ 27-101. Fines and penalties for motor vehicle violations
Violation a misdemeanor unless declared a felony or punishable by civil penalty
(a) It is a misdemeanor for any person to violate any of the provisions of the Maryland Vehicle Law unless the violation:
(1) Is declared to be a felony by the Maryland Vehicle Law or by any other law of this State; or
(2) Is punishable by a civil penalty under the applicable provision of the Maryland Vehicle Law.
Maximum fine for misdemeanor
(b) Except as otherwise provided in this section, any person convicted of a misdemeanor for the violation of any of the provisions of the Maryland Vehicle Law is subject to a fine of not more than $500.
Violations subject to fine not more than $500 or imprisonment for not more than 2 months or both
(c) Any person who is convicted of a violation of any of the provisions of the following sections of this article is subject to a fine of not more than $500 or imprisonment for not more than 2 months or both:
