I signed a lease in my apartment 5 years ago. It was a 6 month lease. After the 6 months, my landlord asked me if I wanted to sign another year lease and I did. I have continued to do this until now. Since my first 6 month lease, I have never received another lease since. I typed up my own lease the first couple years in which I never received one back signed. My landlord and I had a discussion about 6 months ago asking me if I wanted to sign a new lease. He also raised my rent 15% this year and I have paid him the new rental amount. I now need to move due to some personal things. In addition to all this, my landlord has NEVER done anything to the rental (ie paint, new carpets, etc) and I have had plumbing problems. My neighbors are even moving out because of a flood in their apartment.
In any event, my question is can I move out with a 30 day notice and not get charged for an early lease termination? Am I month-to-month?
