Greetings,

I am getting ready to sign my lease and provide first and security, however, the manager of the building has asked me to bring my passport and SS card to make photo copies. I have never been asked this. Can this landlord legally require copies of these documents?

Thank you,

I don't think it's as much about being legal as you having a choice to say, no.

Heck, what if you didn't have a passport?

If you're smart, just find another property.

There is no legal requirement that a landlord rent to you, either, just not discriminate against you.

Why get into a shouting match?

I'd just pass on this property.

See if the landlord bends.

If not, find another apartment.

Sure, you could probably beef it, but to what end?
