Jurisdiction Change - Custody modification

My ex and I have a signed divorce/visitation/support order from the state of MD. Neither of us live in MD any longer, and neither of us live in the same state. The kids and I have lived here for several years. He is threatening to "take custody of the kids" from me.

My question is the process to get jurisdiction changed to my current state of residence. I've spoken to a lawyer who said it's going to cost $2,000 to move it. I was told that basically they would request copies(?) of all the stuff and have it sent to my county of residence, here in TX. Is there a way I can do this myself?

I'm going to end up spending thousands to fight the custody mod, so can someone explain to me what I need to file for a jurisdiction change? If it's just requesting copies, I can get that all started.
