Joint custody

We are being told by my boyfriend's ex that she HAS to have sole custody of their 9 year old daughter because they live in different provinces. She lives in Ontario and he lives in Alberta. He wants joint custody with his ex as the primary care giver. Is it true that she has to have sole custody??

I have no idea as this site is for US law only but I would not lisen to her. He should double check with a Canadian attorney.
