Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft Is this even theft

Can you get convicted of petty theft if you didnt leave the store before they got you, yes i may have had the intent to steal but i never left the store. Can they still charge me with theft?

yes they can. The burden of proof might be a little higher, because you might want to use the defense that you intended to pay at the register bla bla bla but if they feel that the circumstances will clearly convince a judge or a jury they can.
