Sentencing, Plea Bargains is there a time limit on plea bargains and/or can you request a continuance

my son was told he has a couple of days to decide on a plea bargain but the next court date isn't until mid october. i also asked the lawyer for a copy of the evidense (if there is any) so my son has all he needs to make an informed decision, after all, this is his life that will be changed, and all he gave us was an incomplete police statement. what can we do?
