In a personal injury civil lawsuit due to a rear end collision, is a jury supposed to equate liabililty with negligence? I have always heard that, if a defendant is found negligent, then of course that same person is liable in any sort of accident, but not that is was the other way around. My lawyer told me that negligence was legally the same as liability. Is that the case?

If you're negligent, generally your actions configured to the accident. Without boring you to death with the legal reasoning behind it, accept your attorney's representation. He's spot on.

There are several types of liability, however. That said, rear ending someone is generally strict liability, rather than contributory.

If you don't understand what an attorney says to you. You can always ask him or her to explain it until you understand.
