This has come up in recent conversations for me and I really want to know the answer. I know it is illegal to burn currency because it is still considered government property but what about the flag. Mind you I have no inclination to burn either.
 
Well, if you WERE to burn the flag, don't expect the police to be too sympathetic if some veteran smacks you square in the jaw.

No, it is generally not unlawful to burn the flag ... but it CAN be unsafe for the burner, and it CAN land the burner in trouble for arson or some related crime.

Essentially that would be the case.

Burning it in Berkeley would likely draw applause ... burning it in the rural heartland would likely draw a broken nose.
