Roomate In MN how much of a notice do I need to give someone to vacate my home

A friend of my husband's had been living with us for almost four years, we bought a house last year and he told us he was going to move out in March. We never had anything in writing saying how much he pays or how much of a notice we need tp give. Him and his girlfriend have been turned down for all the apartments they apply for so he is not moving out, they keep saying "maybe next month." He pays rent late almost every month and sometimes it's not even the total amount. We have worked with him and let him skip a few months so he can pay other stuff. My family is growing and we need the space. Am I able to just give him a 30 day notice to leave? What are the laws in MN for this?

If you want him out, asking him to leave is meaningless and futile, because he ignores you.
He lies to you, and deceives you.
He plays on your kindness to get his way.

The only way to get him out is to bring an eviction action against him.
