Early this morning I was pulled over for expired plates on my vehicle. The officer walks to my door, asks me for my paperwork, and goes back to his car. Another squad pulls up. They both walk up to the car and the first officer says that he wanted to search the car because he detected a smell of pot. I told him that this was impossible! He then told me that he "was not sure if it was coming from my vehicle or from the farm field that was adjacent to where I was stopped". I told him no you can't search the car. He replied "I have probable cause because I had smelt some thing" After standing out in the rain for 20 minutes with the second officer trying to coerce any information that he could out of me, The search came up empty! My car was left in a state of dissaray, and nary one word was said as to appologise for their behavior. I am a 37 yr old veteran who is clean cut. I was simply comming home from work.
Is this considered to be reasonable search??
