Illegal parking absolves guilt?

As I am a resident of Massachusetts and this occurred in Massachusetts, Massachusetts law advice is what I am seeking. About a week ago, I was parked illegally and someone side swipe my sideview mirror. They were good enough to leave a note, but are now claiming that because I was parked illegally, they are not legally obliged to pay for the damages. How much truth, if any, is there to this claim?

Also, if there is any truth to this claim, where can I go as a place of reference to find more about this matter, or, is there a specific law or statute I should look up to find more about this?

A: None. There is no such thing as negligent parking.
