what is 518A.32, for potential income mean and why could it apply to us

It means exactly what it says. Income will be based on what the party is capable of making. If someone is voluntarily underemployed or only working part time, a full time income will be calculated.

why would it apply to me if I have never worked a full time job,even when we were married! I was always told by my ex that it was my job to take care of our child, and that his job was more important than any job I could ever get...I always held a part time job because I was the one who left my job to tend to our childs needs?

Because now that you are divorced you no longer get to just work part time. You also have a responsibility to support the child. Just like Dad doesnt get the option to work part time to pay less support. Those guidelines apply to both .
