I hope that I have the correct category. If not I apologize and would appreciate being directed to the correct one. I am engaged to a man who has lost of outstanding debt. (child support, federal student loan, owes IRS) Is there a way to protect my assets from being seized or is the only answer not to get married?

My advice-please re-think this relationship unless you want your credit ruined and to go bankrupt. This man obviously does not support his kids or pay his bills. Why do you want to marry a man like that?

I suppose as long as you do not co mingle any of your funds, or put his name on any of your property, you might be ok but if you file jointly on taxes once you are married, any tax return will likely be seized if he owes back support.

Child support and student loans are not dischargeable in BK either so he pretty much is in a bind.
