Hiring for 501 c3

Our church is a 501c3 non-profit orginization. Our pastor is our only paid staff. He is paid far above the average of other pastors in churches our size. We recently have learned that we should have done a study to determine if his salary would be within a normal range, comparable to other churches in our area that are our size. How serious of an issue is this? He has been with us for over 7 years without any of this information in our records. thx
