HELP!!!Medical claims submitted 2 1/2 year late

My obstitrician has submitted claims that are from July 2003 and the insurance wont pay because it is past their filing deadline date. Are we liable for the full amount or any or the 20% we would have paid if it would have been submitted in a timely fashion?
