Does anyone know if there is a statute of limitations on someone who gives their handguns away (like for a payment of a debt) and does not go through a gun dealer. In California, you must go through a gun dealer to satisfy the mandatory waiting period. In addition to this infraction, this person filed a false police report saying the gun was stolen. This was to cover his bases if the gun was used in a crime. To make matters worse (and you may not believe this) he gave the gun to someone who served time for bank robbery. Ugh.

I know this is an infraction, but is there a statute of limitations on it if it was more than 7 years ago?

I'm not going to go looking up all the possible violations, but the SOL may not apply until after the crime is discovered. Not to mention there are possible federal issues involved, and new crimes can be filed if the gun IS used in a crime.

Oh, and this is not an "infraction" - what you describe are misdemeanors and potential felonies.
