Guardianship question

I'm getting married in a few months. My fiance has a 6 year old son and has sole custody. The father hasn't been in the picture, other than to donate the sperm. He has not paid any child support. I live in Kentucky and am needing to know what to do to obtain guardianship...not adopt just yet, but if something happens to my new wife how would i retain guardianship? i was told by our minister that she would need to create a living will saying that i have guardianship....please help me
