Guardianship or Custody of niece.

Hi everyone,
I am looking for some advice, let me give you some background.
My sister who is 19 came to live with my husband and myself about 8 months ago. At the time she was 6 months pregnant. The plan was that she would move in with us and we would help her get onto her feet. Well here we are 8 months later. She has had the baby but she has found over the last few months that motherhood is not what she thought it would be. You see she has always been an unstable person and has been through a lot in her life, from abuse to many different foster homes ( we share the same father, but grew up separate) anyways she is not ready mentally to take care of this child. I have supplied everything the baby needs from day one. She is planning on moving out in a few weeks and has asked me to take care of her baby. I have no problem with this as I have already been taking care of her. However, I want to make sure that I have proper documentation in order to seek medical care and anything else my niece my need. My sister is willing to sign anything she needs to, but how do we go about it?

You really need to see an attorney to make sure you get guardianship or custody legally. If i were you, file for custody. Custody is harder to revoke than guardianship and guardianship is more just for temporary. Where is the father?

Thank you.. The father lives in the state but is badly into drugs and therefore has nothing to do with the baby. He is not listed on the B.C either.
