Can anyone provide some hope?? I'm told that the law will, in almost all cases where the mother is not unfit, award custody to her. The marriage is over, divorce proceedings are underway, and the, very strong belief, is that the 4 year old son would be much better off in Dad's custody. Mom has no visible support system and limited financial means. With all things being fairly equal... does Dad have any chance, at all??

There is a concept of "joint custody" as well, a concept of shared custody. Mom having no visible means of support can also be viewed as her commitment to the family to stay home and take care of the kid. This is not so simple and I'd say that there is at least a chance of joint custody but I'm not sure of the specifics of the case.
