My accountant filed for extension on our 2008 taxes.

We owe money and we know that we would get hit with interest and penalty but totally surprised that our home was "hit with a lien on the property" even before we had a chance to collect money to pay taxes.

Is this correct?? What tax law says you get a lien before even trying to collect the tax due.

Help

An extension is only for filing your return.

If you owe money you have to arrange a payment schedule with the IRS.

It appears you simply sent in your return without any payment and did not arrange a payment plan.

Your CPA can probably get the lien removed after a few payment have been made.

Don't panic.
Start making payments and it won't be a problem.
Ignore the IRS and they will swoop in and garnish your bank accounts and paycheck.

You should not have a lien on your home already but the IRS is a bear about liens.
