I am a medical transcriptionist, working for our local hospital. I get paid by the line. Is it legal to require us to take phone calls from people at the hospital looking for this or that, then be required to spend 1/2 hour plus looking for it, then call back to let them know what we found out, and not be paid for this time, nor be allowed to work extra time to make up the wages we lost working for free? (NEBRASKA)

That depends.

If at the end of the week, the dollars in your paycheck multiply out to minimum wage times the number of hours you actually worked, plus time and a half for any hours over 40, then it's legal.

If they don't, then it's not.
