Within the last 2 weeks, I have received 3 email messages from someone with a hotmail address threatening to expose the 'cheating' they allege I have been doing with a female associate at my workplace. They claim to have emails and records of phone calls between the associate and myself. Thusfar, the only example of I've seen of any 'captured' email correspondence is an internet link I emailed to my associate over 2 months ago.
This morning, it was brought to my attention that my associate had also received 2 of these emails this morning, and her spouse has also has received at least 2 emails at his workplace from this same individual over the last 2 weeks (one of which I believe was received today), both of which I'm told he deleted. I'm not aware of my wife's receipt of any messages from this source as yet.
The tone of the emails we've all received are extremely taunting, the sender wondering "what the bosses would think about some of this personal stuff on email", how our spouses "will react to the mail I sent" and "mail and email sent to the spouses, get ready to rumble".
While I'm not concerned about the content of whatever it is this individual has, as I'm sure it will be embellished or manipulated, at least 3 of us are receiving these messages at our respective workplaces. The intent of the messages are obviously trying to cause harm for harm's sake, as I haven't any idea what this individual hopes to gain from their actions. In any event, the fact that this is happening in the first place could be potentially damaging both professionally and personally.
I've been able to determine the originating IP address of the messages I received (all 3 are the same) and I have forwarded this information to the abuse@ hotmail.com and comcast.net. My feeling is that this may be someone within my company, but I don't know who. I've not replied to any of these messages, simply because I don't know which is the better course of action: silence or speaking out.
Is there any other recourse in addition to the steps I've taken?
