earnest money lost

during the process of buying property,earnest money was put up. after the closing ,the seller is calling looking for the earnest money. realtor says he lost it and i should write another check. shouldn't the seller be contacting the realtor?

Who did you give the earnest money to and what form was it (personal check, certified check, cash, etc.)?
