Drug Crimes, Substance Abuse Drug possession charge turns to bench warrent and arrest

My friend was arrested four days ago due to a bench warrant he had, he was then seen the next day and then was sent to twin towers in LA.The reason he was kept in jail was because he did not follow the orders of the judge and did not attend the drug classes he needed. However the only reason he did not attend the drug classes was due to his financial status. He recently lost his job but was going to start his new one on September 13. He is currently attending college for criminal justice and was going to start citizens academy on the 15th of this month. He is currently in the mens facility in Los Angeles and his next court date is the 18th. He is being charged for possession of a controlled substance which was found in his car but it was not his.I was wondering what are his options? what should he do or say? and should he get a lawyer? Also he has prior record, no felonies, and one other case which has been settled and none were drug related. Will this make any difference?
