COPPERAS COVE, Texas (KWTX) - A woman and her boyfriend are behind bars accused of moving out of her apartment and leaving her son behind to fend for himself, an arrest warrant affidavit states.

Erica Renee Sanders and Keven Dwayne Adams are charged with abandoning and endangering a child without intent to return, according to the court document obtained by KWTX.

Police were dispatched to investigate reports of an abandoned child at an apartment complex off Primrose Drive at about 5:20 p.m. on Oct. 17.

At the complex, they met a 12-year-old boy who said his mother and her boyfriend moved out of their home while he was at school.

The boy reportedly returned home to find it empty of all furniture and household items.

A neighbor told police the couple had a history of kicking the boy out.

The police officers contacted Sanders and Adams on the phone and Adams told the officers that Sanders had not abandoned the boy.

Adams, according to police, said Sanders had merely moved in with him and that her son was not welcome at his home.

Furthermore, the couple told police that Sanders' brother was supposed to pick up the boy after school.

Sanders, police allege, could not provide an estimated time of arrival for her brother or contact information so that police could call the man to verify her claim.

The police officers eventually contacted Child Protective Services (CPS).

Several hours later, no one had made an attempt to retrieve the boy, police said.

The officers eventually got ahold of Sanders' brother, and the man said he had no knowledge he was supposed to pick the boy up.

CPS reported to police that Adams and Sanders refused to provide an address to their new home. Investigators had to search water utility records in order to get an address for Adams' home on 2nd Street.

Later, Adams allegedly told the officers he would not let the boy inside his home if the officers had an arrest warrant for Sanders.

Police ended up arresting the couple and the boy eventually left to stay with his mother's brother, the affidavit states.
