Statement was placed in newspaper (which was about a fire that had occured in a shop believed to be suspicious) for stating that police were still looking for the owner of the shop (whoch they had stated themselves and also the fire service had stated the fire appeared suspicious). The owner was later contacted after the release of the newspaper and told the fire started due to a plug catching fire. She contacted the newspaper through a solicitor who stated that she wanted money for damages etc and damage to reputation etc. We were given a reliable source which was the police and fire services themselves and only stated that police were looking for the owner.

Um, what was the damage to the person by the paper reporting news?

You have to show damage, you just don't run around suing people because you don't like what they have to say. The paper didn't post anything more than what info they were given.
