My friend and I are having a lively debate on why sports leagues self-regulate illegal performance enhancers. My opinion on the subject is that the reason why the leagues self-regulate is that they must comply with laws that ban illegal substances (Controlled Substances Act, Schedule III). He believes that they self-regulate for these substances just for good public relations not for the laws. His rational is that if they were really looking for these drugs they would drug test everyone at every job not just in these sports leagues.
Now I know that the war on drugs is a big mess but in my field the only reason why we regulate is to comply with government laws and regulations, not just to tell our customers that we are a law biding business. Companies must comply with government laws unless they are exempt for some reason or another.
