hello-

to make a long story short, there is a very good possibility that I will be awarded custody of my nephew, currently 2 months old. This is something that child services asked of myself and my wife just recently and because the child is family we feel its necessary that the child grow up with family rather than in foster care. I currently have 3 children all above the ages of 7. I do have a question regarding assistance from the state, whether it be health care or financial, and what the guidelines may be for families taking custody of their nephew. I'm concerned that the child may have health issues and that the cost of day care (my wife and I both work full time) would burden my existing family (I have 3 children). I know this is not considered foster care but I was wondering if the state offers any assistance. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

You need to talk to the social services case manager. I assume there is an ongoing CPS investigation? Every state is different. You probably are eligible for some daycare assistance however the state might require you to get licensed and to take classes as a foster parent to receive any more help. If the child is classified as special needs, or a ward of the state, then you should have all medical care covered for the infant.
