As the non-custodial parent, I am current with my child support payments. My 2 boys 13 & 15 live in Virginia with their mother. She has lost her job, their home and for some reason cannot get any assistance from unemployment or social services. She leaves me daily voicemails that she is moving from Virginia to California on Sept 11th and dropping the boys to live with me as she can no longer take care of them.
My question is, how can I protect myself when the boys arrive? It doesn't make sense that the child support order would still be in effect if she is not taking care of them. What else should I be considering when she leaves them? She will be moving 600 miles away from me and the boys.
I'll need to enroll them in school, since I've never had custody of them...will I anticipate any problems with the school districts in CA? I think I should also look into some counseling for the boys, is there anything from social services available to them...they have been through some tough times with their mother from multiple evictions to being homeless and our relationship has only been by phone for the last 9 years.
Any advice would be appreciated.
