We have an order of protection against our neighbor (who is less than 50 ft away) for almost a year because he pulled a knife on my husband in our driveway and makes repeated threats to "get him". Since then, we have had to put up surveillance around our entire house and are in constant fear every time we are outside because the man is extremely mentally unstable and continues to harass us and make threats of violence. He has been in jail over 4 of the last 6 weeks due to violations of his restraining order, and we are at the end of our rope! From the very beginning of the harassment over a year ago, we have made repeated contact with his landlord asking for his help, and recently, asking that he remove the neighbor from the property for the safety of our children and ourselves. He tells us over and over again he will see what he can do about getting him out of the house, but nothing is ever done. We need to know what our options are for filing a civil lawsuit. We feel we have exhausted all other avenues!

Sorry, but your neighbor's landlord has no obligations to you over this.

A lawsuit won't do you any good. Your neighbor is a lunatic who doesn't comply with the restraining order. He isn't going to be bothered by a lawsuit. It will only cost you money and get you nowhere or, worse, escalate things by getting him even more hostile.

You need a permit in Iowa to purchase a handgun but you don't need one to purchase a rifle or shotgun as a stopgap until you and your husband get your permits.

You might not like the idea but it's a better idea than being dead.

OOP = orders of protection aren't made of kevlar, as they simple orders written on pretty legal paper.

A 3 year old baby can tear the piece of paper on which the OOP is written.

Nutballs, whackjobs, and violent THUGS don't care what a judge says, heck they don't care about anything civilized people do, because they're violent, criminally prone, whackjobs.

A gun won't help, it'll only delude you into thinking you can protect yourself.

I've seen people freeze at that moment a deer or a jack rabbit was in their sights, so don't think just because you buy a gun, you'll be any safer.

You could do what what rich people and celebrities do, hire yourself an armed protection detail, but it is a hell of a lot cheaper to move.

Unfortunately, moving is your safest option.

The sooner you move away from the whackjob, the criminally insane, the perverts, the deviants, the uncivilized thugs, the quicker your safety will improve, and its a heck of a lot less expensive.

If this were the latter half of the 19th century or the first quarter of the 20th century, YES a gun would change the equation in your favor.

This being the first quarter of the 21st century, expect things to deteriorate further, civility to disappear, and the savages to roam freely amongst us destroying lives, stealing our money, and sexually molesting our pets, our inanimate property, our children, men and women, babies, children, these creatures are among us ready to pounce and destroy.

No piece of paper, nothing short of an underground bunker, 100 feet deep in the ground, protected by 12 inch thick concrete, and 24 inch armor plating will protect us.

This being the first quarter of the 21st century, expect things to deteriorate further, civility to disappear, and the savages to roam freely amongst us destroying lives, stealing our money, and sexually molesting our pets, our inanimate property, our children, men and women, babies, children, these creatures are among us ready to pounce and destroy.

We're gonna need a bigger gun, more than one, and lots of ammo, and friends with guns, if we're gonna stave off the zombie apocalypse.
