Converting VHS tape to DVD same as downloading same movie from internet?

Pretty much what the title states. This is all for private use, not to sell, distribute or upload the movies.

I own several movies on VHS tapes. I can use my camcorder to digitize them and then burn them to DVDs, or I can download the already digitized version from the web and burn that to DVD. Same thing?

Or am I not even allowed to do the digitization myself?

As long as you own the originals, I've never heard of anyone being prosecuted for digitizing their VHS titles.

As greedy as those industries are, I haven't heard of them litigating against what you asked about. Besides, how would they ever know?

I agree - you're allowed to convert to a different format provided you don't, as you know, distribute it afterwards.
