I am a practice manager at an animal hospital. The Dr. filled a prescription for a narcotic for an owners cat. Owner came in and paid by check (around ($110) and picked up the meds. About 2-3 weeks later week get a letter from our bank with the check stating "stopped payment". Owner stated that she accidentally wrote the check on a closed account. What can we do? Should we contact the police being a narcotic was involved?

If your county DA prosecutes check fraud, turn it over to them. Have you called the client and asked her to honor her check?

If in doubt, always contact the police. The police will investigate, or apprise you of the correct agency to contact.

When the client said she wrote the check accidentally on a closed account, did she make other arrangements to pay you?

If she is not providing payment for the bad check, seek to file charges against her for writing a bad check and theft of services. Sue her for the amount of the check plus bank fees in small claims if restitution is not part of her sentencing.
