My 16 year old daughter was caught shoplifting in Westchester, NY and we (parents of) have since received a letter from a legal firm demanding payment of $500.00. Are we as parents of a minor resposible for this in NYS.
Yes, like many civil collection if you don't pay it, the firm could have a judgment filed against you. In NY State the law allows up to 5 times the amount of the item taken.
