childs dad dies, stepmom dies who gets custody

My son has been living in La. with his dad and stepmom for the past 13yrs. They both have recently died. I came to La. to bring my son back to Ca. and was served with an application for ExParte Custody order. I retained an attorney. We appeared in court armed with the joint custody order from the state of Ca giving the deceased physical custody and me visitation. The family is falsely stating that I gave my son up at birth and that he has no relationship with me or the state of Ca. To our surprise the La. court granted temporary custody to the deceased sister until the hearing in 2weeks. And in reading the order it appears that I am to "show cause" why the sister should not be awardered permenant custody of MY CHILD. My La. atty does not appear to be concerned but I am very concerned. A law chat room mentioned UCCJEA. Whats my best course of action. I cannot afford to reatin two attorneys.
