My divorce agreement states that child support payments are to be made by direct deposit and were for the year 2015. In January 2016, my ex gave me a check from his personal checking account. Should I cash it?

Yes. No reason you can't continue to accept checks if paid on time and are good. Just make sure you don't write checks on that money until you confirm that the funds were collected by your bank.

Photograph or scan the check for your records before depositing it.

As an alternative, you can go to his bank, confirm good funds, and cash the check on the spot.

This is not something you need to pick a fight about.

Cashing those checks MIGHT not be an issue for you.

It COULD become an issue for your former consort.

The court MIGHT construe those payments to be GIFTS.

You should contact the court, your lawyer, or the child support office for guidance.

Until you know for sure, cashing those checks might become an issue for you.

If I were YOU, I'd contact the child support office, the court, and find out how best to proceed.

Don't you find this sudden change in behavior odd?
